It's was actually written as a chorus line. It was meant to be an upbeat dance number. But as George and Ira Gershwin were writing, they started talking, and George started slowing down the tempo. They both realized how beautiful it sounded and it became the ballad "show stopper" It ended up being the last song George finished before he died of a brain tumor. It somewhat mirrored his feelings of the life he lived.
